soaring

last saturday, heidi and i took the metro to the national mall to go to dc's annual kite festival. it was a cool day, but sunny and probably not quite windy enough to be flying kites, but we didn't have a kite, so that didn't really matter...what we REALLY wanted to go down for was the kite flying competition. last year i got all hyped up for the festival, but it ended up raining and i didn't get down there in time to see anything, so this year heidi and i had a plan to change that.

we got down there at 2pm when the competition was starting, but didn't know where it was supposed to be. how would you know out of all these kites, which ones were doing tricks and trying to beat out the others and compete?

the people were everywhere. for some reason it was almost depressing to me, because i thought, why are all these people not doing this every weekend? should it have to be a special occasion for parents to take their kids outside and fly a kite with them? i think not. this little boy couldn't wait for his dad to get the kite in the air, and with the lack of wind he was getting really impatient. we were only just walking by and i heard him say "can i fly now dad? now my turn?" at least three times. cute! unless you're his dad, probably.

heidi and i walked towards the washington monument and eventually found the competition. it ended up being a rough day for me, so she made it her goal to entertain me, cheer me up and make me laugh. she must have spent 30 minutes talking about the "kithe flyin compethishion" and talking with a lisp (not to offend those of you with speech impediments, but it was hilarious). it was fun trying to be overly excited to watch two grown men stand one another off with kite tricks, all to a background of really loud club music with an announcer who named every one of the tricks they performed. to be fair, they actually were pretty good. but, it's kinda like those guys who do all the yo-yo tricks...you're impressed, but at the back of your mind you're secretly wondering if they stay in on saturday nights to perfect their one-cornered kite tip stop or something of that sort. impressed, but also kinda glad you aren't them! (because i'd much rather stay in on saturday nights to study oral pathology...duh.)

so you can never be too excited about kites. right heids? as an aside, i am SO blessed to have my sister here in dc. i don't know what i'll do when she moves away in a few months. i'll be lonely and bored and i don't think anyone else will want to replace her and hear about all the hours of dental school talk she so patiently listens to. she makes my life in dc a lot better.

here are all the kites in front of the capitol. there were sooo many more than that behind us as well. (ignore the giant black blob, that would be me needing a new camera.)

overall, i give heidi 1OO% of the credit that i did actually have some fun last saturday despite my yucky day. she was my little guardian angel, for sure.

and also, isn't this pretty?

  2. Sorry to hear that you were having a bad day. Kurt and I were excited to see you and were hoping to say hi, but you kept on going. We saw a little of the kite flying competition and I started to laugh because no matter the music or announcer, it's hard to get really stoked about competitive kite flying. It made me smile though.
