how deep the father's love
"how deep the Father's love for us
how vast beyond all measure
that He should give Hs only Son
and make a wretch His treasure
how great the pain of searing loss
the Father turns His face away
as wounds which mar the chosen One
bring many sons to glory
behold the Man upon a cross
my sin upon His shoulders
ashamed, i hear my mocking voice
call out among the scoffers
it was my sin that held Him there
until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
i know that it is finished
i will not boast in anything
no gifts, no power, no wisdom
but i will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
why should i gain from His reward
i cannot give an answer
but this i know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom"

how great our Father loves us indeed! today, i tried to think about this in more human terms, since that is all i really have to compare it with.
i often think of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross in terms of what He gave up to save us from our sin; that He gave up his life on earth, His full human-ness, went through unspeakable pain and torture, and had the Father turn His back on Him as full punishment for all we've done.
when i only think about Jesus' death from this perspective, i miss out on gaining a full understanding of God's love though, because i forget to think about the sacrifice God was making by giving up his one and only Son. can you even imagine? His ONLY Son. and God wasn't surprised by this happening, He loves us so much that He planned it! He knows us so well that He knew He would have to come to us, in the form of a man to save us on His own. because nothing we could do would be good enough to bring us up to Him, He came down to us. that's love.
the sacrifice that this involves, when i try to put it in terms of something i can fathom, is just monstrous. in my life, i have barely begun to understand and know earthly love; between a man and a woman, a father and a daughter, two friends, even between an owner and a pet. i can't imagine willingly giving up someone i love for someone who is hypocritical, selfish, ungrateful, doesn't spend much time with me or listen to what i say, and only asks me for things when they need or want something (that would be us). why on earth does God love us so much!?!

psalm 23
the Lord is my shepherd, i shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.
even though i walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
i will fear no evil,
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and i will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
the Lord is my shepherd, i shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.
