my friend camilla recently posted on her blog about those "old worship songs"...the ones we grew up on. the ones that introduced us into a life-saving relationship with Jesus, the ones we were singing when we first felt the Holy Spirit move in our hearts.
this got me to reminiscing about some of my favorite times in college...when a big group of friends would gather together in someone's dorm room or common room, or book a bonfire pit by the lake or at the north part of campus by the lighthouse and we'd get together and just worship. one or two guys would bring their guitars, someone might bring a drum, and we'd sing for hours...one song flowing into the next, everyone knowing the words by heart, spontaneous harmonies thrown in once in awhile. we got so many looks like we were crazy (especially when we were in a common room, as everyone entering the dorm would walk by us), but no one cared- we just sang our hearts out to the Lord.
i think those are up there in the moments i'd like to never forget. just you and your closest friends, outside under the stars, praising God for His creation.
so let's go camping. and someone bring their guitar. let's sing.
some of the "back then" favorites:
Heart of Worship, Matt Redman
Beautiful One, Tim Hughes
You are Holy (Prince of Peace), Michael W. Smith
Our Love is Loud (We Love You, Lord), David Crowder Band
...this youtube video cracks me up!
Take My Life, Chris Tomlin
and my favorite worship song to this day- In Christ Alone, Newsboys
the lyrics to this song brought me to my knees and brought tears to my eyes way back then..."no guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me." this song taught me that His sacrifice on the cross was and is enough to truly forgive me of all my sins, by no power of my own.
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
